Mediation Resources & Frequently Asked Questions

For over 30 years, Districtwide Mediation has helped Iowans navigate court-ordered mediation. This page outlines everything you need to get started—from scheduling to compliance, reporting, and forms.

How Do I Schedule a Mediation?

Schedule mediation via phone, email, or contact form.

Please include

  • Your name and/or attorney name

  • Party names and contact information

  • Opposing counsel (if applicable)

  • Dates you are available (for in-person or virtual mediation)

  • Preferred mediators (optional)

How Are Mediators Selected?

We carefully match you with a court-approved mediator across all counties in Iowa based on:

  • Your judicial district and county

  • Case type (e.g., family, probate, civil, small claims)

  • Your scheduling needs and budget

  • Language or cultural requirements

  • In-person or virtual preference

What Happens After Mediation is Scheduled?

Once mediation is confirmed, we send:

  • Date, time, location (virtual or in-person), and mediator name

  • Agreement to Mediate (your mediation contract)

  • Certificate of Compliance, if applicable

  • Participant Evaluation Form

At that point, you’re all set. Your mediator will be ready at the appointed time.

What Does Mediation Cost?

Our program is affordable and transparent:

  • Mediator fee: typically $75–$250/hour

  • Flat administrative fee of $80

These amounts are split between the parties. Parties whose income falls below the poverty lines qualify for pro bono services.

Is Reporting Required After Mediation?

Yes. For family law “final matters,” the Iowa Supreme Court requires attorneys to submit the Family Law Mediation Report within 7 days of mediation.

This ensures compliance and timely resolution tracking.
